Century Aluminum Company has commenced production of its first hot metal following the successful expansion of its Mt. Holly smelter in South Carolina. The project, expected to reach full operational capacity by the end of June 2026, will increase total U.S. primary aluminum output by approximately 10%.
The expansion has already generated more than 125 well-paying jobs in the region, reinforcing the company’s position as the largest producer of primary aluminum in the United States. The move aligns with broader efforts to strengthen domestic supply chains for critical materials.

Earlier this year, Century also announced a strategic partnership with Emirates Global Aluminum to develop a new primary aluminum smelter in Oklahoma. The facility is projected to add 750,000 tonnes of annual production capacity, effectively doubling current U.S. output. The project is expected to create over 1,000 direct jobs and 4,000 construction roles.
CEO Jesse Gary highlighted that supportive trade policies, including Section 232 tariffs, are driving renewed investment in domestic aluminum production and enhancing supply chain resilience.
